Curtiss XF9C-1 Sparrowhawk 1931 Sole Prototype Vintage Navy Photo BuNo 8731 3.75 x 2.75
Akron/Macon Parasite Fighter, Dealer Provenance Chain
DESCRIPTIONVintage photograph of the Curtiss XF9C-1 Sparrowhawk, Bureau of Aeronautics serial 8731, the only XF9C-1 ever built. This aircraft was the prototype that proved the Navy's "hook-on" parasite fighter concept, a fighter small enough to fit through the hangar door of the airships USS Akron and USS Macon and be launched and recovered mid-flight from a retractable trapeze slung under the airship's belly. On October 27, 1931, this exact airplane made the first successful hook-on to a rigid airship in Navy history, catching the trapeze of the USS Los Angeles at Lakehurst, New Jersey. That test opened the door to the Akron and Macon "heavier-than-air units," later nicknamed the "Men on the Flying Trapeze." The XF9C-1 itself was scrapped in 1936 and no longer exists; only its later sibling, the XF9C-2, survives today at the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center, wearing another aircraft's markings. Photos of the original XF9C-1 in its as-delivered configuration, before the skyhook and gull-wing changes of the XF9C-2, are scarce.Powered by a Wright J-6-9E (early Navy designation for the Wright R-975 Whirlwind), rated 420 HP, delivered to the Navy in March 1931.The photo back is captioned in period ink "Curtiss XF9C-1, Wright J-6-9E 420 H.P. (Copy) (Official U.S. Navy Photo)," and carries a printed dealer stamp for Reid Patterson, 325 E. Seventh Street, Charlotte, N.C., along with a period collector signature reading "Wm. Yeager." A documented paper trail through two known 20th centurycollector hands. This is a period copy print of the official Navy photo rather than a first-generation press print, as noted on the back by the original owner. Photo measures approximately 3.75" x 2.75". Credited only as "Official U.S. Navy Photo," no individual photographer named.CONDITIONSepia/cream-toned period photographic print consistent with 1930s stock. Corners intact, image clear and well-defined, no tears or losses. Light handling wear consistent with age and history of collector ownership. Back carries a clear period ink caption, a printed dealer stamp, and a collector's signature, all fully legible.Sold as-is, please review photos closely and message with any condition questions before buying.
