The Panavia Tornado is a family of twin engine, variable sweep wing, multi-role combat aircraft jointly developed and manufactured in Italy, the United Kingdom and Germany. The aircraft first flew on 14 August 1974, and was introduced into service in 1979-1980. There were 990 aircraft manufactured in three versions from 1979 to 1998.
The Italian Air Force was founded as an independant service arm on 28 March 1923. The branch has over 700 aircraft of varoius manufacturers in service. In 1994, the air force leased 24 Panavia Tornado Air Defense Variants from the United Kingdom. The Tornado's remained in service until 2004 when they were replaced by the Eurofighter Typhoon.
This aircraft is a Tornado IDS (Interdictor/Strike) fighter-bomber, and was assigned to 6 Stormo 102 Gruppo Squadron, 6th Wing, based at Ghedi Air Base, Italy. The unit is an Operational Conversion All-Weather Fighter Bomber Squadron. The entire wing is to be re-equipped with the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lighting ll, replacing existing models in the Wing.
