The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is a single engine supersonic interceptor which was extensively deployed as a fighter-bomber during the Cold War. It was designed for the United States Air Force and was developed into an all-weather multirole aircraft in the early 1960's. It has been manufactured by several other nations and has seen widespread service outside the United States.
The F-104 first flew on 04 March, 1954 and was activated by the United States Air Force on 26 February, 1958. It flew over 5,000 sorties during the Vietnam Conflict. The F-104C variant was a fighter-bomber for the United States Air Force Tactical Air Command (TAC). It has improved fire-control radar and had in-flight refueling capability. There were a total of seventy-seven F-104C's manufactured. On 14 December, 1959, an F-104C set a world altitude record of 103,389 feet. There were a total of 2,578 of multiple variants manufactured.
This United State Air Force (USAF) TF-104 was a twin seat training version. It was part of the 418th Tactical Fighter Training Squadron (TFTS), of the 58th Tactical Training Wing (TTW) based at Luke Air Force Base. Luke AFB was loacted near Phoenix, Arizona. From 1964 to 1983, the West German Air Force trained their F-104 pilots at Luke. They trained using German F-104's with U.S. serial numbers and markings.
