The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is a single engine supersonic interceptor which was extensively deployed as a fighter-bomber during the Cold War. It has been manufactured by several other nations and has seen widespread service outside the United States.
The F-104 first flew on 04 March, 1954 and was activated by the United States Air Force on 26 February, 1958. It flew over 5,000 sorties during the Vietnam Conflict. A later version, the F-104G, was the most produced version of the F-104 with 1,127 models manufactured. The "G" version featured strengthened fuselage, wing and empennage, revised flaps, and upgraded avionics. Altogether, there were a total of 2,578 of multiple variants of the F-104 manufactured. The last military F-104 was retired from the Italian Air Force in 2004. There are a few privately owned, restored and airworthy F-104's still flying today.
