TheSCAswere used to ferrySpace Shuttlesfrom landing sites back to the Shuttle Landing Facility at the Kennedy Space Center. The orbiters were placed on top of the SCAs by Mate-Demate Devices, large gantry-like structures that hoisted the orbiters off the ground for post-flight servicing then mated them with the SCAs for ferry flights.

In approach and landing test flights conducted in 1977, the test shuttleEnterprisewas released from an SCA during flight and glided to a landing under its own control.

THE FINAL FLIGHTs

At the end of the Space Shuttle program the SCA was used to deliver the retired orbiters from the Kennedy Space Center to their museums.Discoverywas delivered to the Udvar-Hazy Center of the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum in Chantilly, Virginia, near Washington, D.C. on April 19, 2012. On April 17, 2012,Discoverywas flown atop aShuttle Carrier Aircraftescorted by a NASA T-38 Talon chase aircraft in a final farewell flight. The 747 and Discovery flew over Washington, D.C. and the metropolitan area around 10 a.m. and arrived at Dulles around 11 a.m. The flyover and landing were widely covered on national news media.

The last ferry flight tookEndeavourfrom Kennedy Space Center to Los Angeles between September 19 and 21, 2012 via Ellington Field and Edwards Air Force Base. After leaving Edwards theSCA with Endeavourperformed low level flyovers above various landmarks across California, from Sacramento to the San Francisco Bay Area, and finally to Los Angeles.Endeavourwas delivered to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). From there the orbiter was transported through the streets of Los Angeles and Inglewood to its final destination in the California Science Center in Exposition Park.

TheShuttle Carrier Aircraft[SCA]

The first orbiter,Enterprise, made its maiden flight in 1977. An unpowered glider, it was carried by a modifiedBoeing 747airliner called theShuttle Carrier Aircraft[SCA]and released for a series of atmospheric test flights and landings.Enterprisewas partially disassembled and retired after completion of critical testing. The remaining orbiters were fully operational spacecraft, and were launched vertically as part of theSpace Shuttlestack.

The first aircraft, aBoeing 747-123registeredN905NA, was originally manufactured for American Airlines and still carried visible American cheatlines while testing Enterprise in the 1970s. It was acquired in 1974 and initially used for trailing wake vortex research as part of a broader study by NASA Dryden, as well as Shuttle tests involving an F-104 flying in close formation and simulating a release from the 747.

By 1983,SCA N905NAno longer carried the distinct American Airlines tricolor cheatline. NASA replaced it with its own livery, consisting of a white fuselage and a single blue cheatline. That year, this aircraft was also used to fly Enterprise on a tour in Europe, with refuelling stops in Goose Bay, Canada; Keflavik, Iceland; England; and West Germany. It then went to the Paris Air Show.

In 1988, in the wake of the Challenger accident,NASAprocuredthe 2ndSCA, asurplusBoeing 747SR-46fromJapan Airlines, registered asN911NA.It entered service with NASA in 1990 after undergoing modifications similar to N905NA. It was first used in 1991 to ferry the new shuttle Endeavour from the manufacturers in Palmdale, California to Kennedy Space Center.

Based at the Dryden Flight Research Center within Edwards Air Force Base in California the two aircraft were functionally identical,althoughN911NAhas five upper-deck windows on each side, whileN905NAhas only two.The rear mounting points on both aircraft were labeled with humorous instructions to "attach orbiter here" or "place orbiter here", clarified by the precautionary note "black side down".

TheOrbiters:

Six orbiters were built for flight.TheEnterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, AtlantisandEndeavour. All were built inPalmdale, California, by thePittsburgh,Pennsylvania -basedRockwell Internationalcompany.

TheSpace Shuttle Orbiterwas the reusablespace planecomponent of theSpace Shuttle Program. Operated byNASA the U.S. space agency, this vehicle could carry astronauts and payloads intolow Earth orbit, perform in-space operations, thenre-enter the atmosphereand land as aglider, returning its crew and any on-board payload to the Earth.

Shuttle Carriers were capable of operating from alternative shuttle landing sites such as those in theUnited Kingdom, Spain, and France.Due to the reduced range of the Shuttle Carrier while mated to an orbiter, additional preparations for removal of the payload from the orbiter may have been necessary to reduce its weight should this have happened.

Mission Profiles

Ferry flights by the SCAgenerally transported the orbiters fromEdwards Air Force Base, the shuttle's secondary landing site, to the Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF) at theKennedy Space Centerwhere the orbiter was processed. This was common in the early days of the space shuttle program.

1] Space ShuttleAtlantis(Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-104): is a Space Shuttle orbiterbelonging to the NationalAeronauticsand Space Administration (NASA), the space flightand space explorationagency of the United States.Constructed by the Rockwell Internationalcompany in Southern Californiaand delivered to the Kennedy Space Centerin Eastern Floridain April 1985,Atlantisis the fourth operational and the second-to-last Space Shuttle built. Its maiden flight was STS-51-Jfrom 3 to 7 October 1985.

STS-134byEndeavorwas expected to be the final flight before STS-135 was authorized in October 2010.Atlantisembarked on its 33rd and final mission, also the final mission of a space shuttle, STS-135,on 8 July 2011.

By the end of its final mission,Atlantishad orbited the Eartha total of 4,848 times, traveling nearly 126,000,000mi (203,000,000km) or more than 525 times the distance from the Earth to the Moon.

Atlantisis named afterRV Atlantis, a two-masted sailing ship that operated as the primary research vessel for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institutionfrom 1930 to 1966.

Atlantisflew 33 missions and was the last Space Shuttle to fly.

2] Space ShuttleDiscovery(Orbiter Vehicle Designation:OV-103)is one of theorbitersfromASA’s NASA's Space Shuttle Programand the third of five fully operational orbiters to be built. Its first mission, STS-41-D,flew from August 30 to September 5, 1984. Over 27 years of service it launched and landed 39 times, gathering morespace flightsthan any other spacecraft to date.

Discoverybecame the third operational orbiter to enter service, preceded byColumbiaandChallenger. It embarked on its last mission, STS-133, on February 24, 2011 and touched down for the final time atKennedy Space Centeron March 9,having spent a cumulative total of almost a full year in space.Discoveryperformed both researchandInternational Space Station(ISS)assembly missions. It also carriedtheHubble Space Telescopeinto orbit.Discoverywas the first operational shuttle to be retired, followed byEndeavourand thenAtlantis.

By its last mission,Discoveryhad flown 149 million miles (238 million km) in 39 missions, completed 5,830 orbits, and spent 365 days in orbit over 27 years.[27] Discovery flew more flights than any other Orbiter Shuttle, including four in 1985 alone.Discoveryflew all three "return to flight" missions after theChallengerandColumbiadisasters: STS-26 in 1988, STS-114 in 2005, and STS-121 in 2006. Discoveryflew the ante-penultimate mission of the Space Shuttle program, STS-133, having launched on February 24, 2011.Endeavourflew STS-134 and Atlantis performed STS-135, NASA's last Space Shuttle mission. On February 24, 2011, Space Shuttle Discovery launched from Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex 39-A to begin its final orbital flight.

Discoveryflew 39 missions.

3] Space Shuttle Endeavour(Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-105) is a retired orbiter from NASA's Space Shuttle program and the fifth and final operational shuttle built. It embarked on its first mission, STS-49, in May 1992 and its 25th and final mission, STS-134, in May 2011. STS-134 was expected to be the final mission of the Space Shuttle program, but with the authorization of STS-135,Atlantisbecame the last shuttle to fly.

Endeavourflew its final mission, STS-134, to theInternational Space Station (ISS)in May 2011. After the conclusion of STS-134,Endeavourwas formally decommissioned.

STS-134 was intended to launch in late 2010, but on July 1 NASA released a statement saying the Endeavour mission was rescheduled for February 27, 2011.

Endeavourlanded at the Kennedy Space Center at 06:34 UTC on June 1, 2011, completing its final mission. It was the 25th night landing of a shuttle. Over its flight career,Endeavourflew 122,883,151 miles and spent 299 days in space. DuringEndeavour'slast mission, the Russian spacecraft Soyuz TMA-20 departed from theISSand paused at a distance of 200 meters. Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli took a series of photographs and videos of theISSwithEndeavourdocked. This was the second time a shuttle was photographed docked and the first time since 1996. Commander Mark Kelly was the last astronaut offEndeavourafter the landing, and the crew stayed on the landing strip to sign autographs and pose for pictures.

STS-134 was the penultimate space shuttle mission; STS-135 was added to the schedule in January 2011, and in JulyAtlantisflew for the final time.

Endeavourflew 25 missions.

Collectors' Hint - What are my choices with Plastic Model purchasing and collecting?

It is the nature of the Space and Aviation market that Space and Aircraft Model Kits of important space or aviationvehicles tend to be limited in production or alternatively sell very quickly. Two different examples are the premier Apollo 11 kits or the P-51 Mustang.

Many model kits are 're-launched' on significant anniversaries.

Typically, the two key choices when purchasing plastic model kits are:

i)Make the Plastic Model or

ii) Preserve the Plastic Model 'pristine' in its box and with all original plans and parts for the future.

The former choice i) provides the enjoyment and satisfaction of model making, more so when they are rare or unusual models.

The latter choice ii) can sometimes result in a purchase worth thousands of dollars in later years or decades. There are hundreds of examples.

Of course a 3rd choice is to benefit from both and purchase two models!

Limited Editionslike this are exceptional examples!
