ca.1857(?) ILLINOIS CENTRAL RAILROAD, book of 34 railroad maps, pre- Civil War:

circa 1857 (estimated) book containing an Outline Map and a series of Sectional Maps showing the boundary of the lands of the ILLINOIS CENTRAL RAIL ROAD within the 15 mile (approximate) limit. 34 b&w maps in all. Dark brown pebbled leather covers, framed & ornately decorated in blind (i.e \"blindstamped,\") worn and scuffed as shown in photos above. Cancelled, deaccessioned, removed from the Baker Library of the Graduate School of Business Administration, Harvard University, still with most of the usual exLib stamps, stickers, marks & distinctions -- but no marks of any kind on the maps. Binding is tender at hinges, & starting (i.e beginning to crack, but holding) at Outline Map page, but the textblock is sound throughout. Endpapers are soiled, but all maps (some folding) are clean & in VG+ or better condition. I understand the ICRR was chartered in 1851 and initially completed in 1856. The company extended into Iowa in 1867 -- lines which are NOT indicated here. Further, the Galena & Chicago Union RR is shown, which operated under that name only until 1862 or 1864 when it was leased by the Cedar Rapids & Missouri, & later consolidated with the Chicago & North Western. Also shown is the Peoria & Oquakwa (~1855-1858) and the Terre Haute & Alton (c.1856,) as well as other early railroad lines, all of which leads me to estimate the printing date of the book at approximately 1857 or thereabouts. I believe this book to be a very scarce item. Will be mailed USPS postally insured to most any address within the contiguous U.S., thus the higher than usual shipping fee.
