A6M2 Type 0 Model 21All that the Spitfire was to England, The Zero was to Japan.
A6M2 was the most maneuverable and most successful with its 2x 20mm Type 99 Mk1 wing cannon against Wildcats, P40s, Hurricanes, and even Spitfires. This was the type flown by Saburō Sakaiagainst Pug Sutherland’s Wildcat over Guadalcanal.
A6M5 Type 0 Model 52with Sakae 31 1200hp engine was the last and best armed and armored. With few carriers, there was no need for wing folding. Model 52 emphasized long range, and maneuverability, but without real self-sealing tanksand armor plating.
A6M5 Model 52 used either of two gun systems: drum-fed Type 99-2 Mark 3 or belt-fed Type 99-2 Mk4. Either way, Model 52 retained 2x 7.7mm Type 97 MG on left and 13.2mm Type 3 Browning Type 3 on right cowl.
