The Colombian-German Air Transport Company , orSCADTA, was the world\'s second oldest airline (KLM the oldest), and the first airline in the Americas, operating from 1919 until World War II started. In 1940 it merged with another Colombian airline SACO to form the present day AVIANCA. SCADTA spurred Juan Tripp to form Pan American Airlines as the US competition in the growing Latin American and world air travel. Avianca operated Constellations from the early 50s until about 1970 progressively replaced by B-727\'s serving national routes working alongside the already in-use B-720B for nondomestic routes.
