Lufthansa (Germany):
The national flag carrier of Germany and one of the world's largest airlines, Lufthansa has a long and varied history with routes dating back to pre-world war two. Over the years the airline has seen steady growth with both a domestic and international network comprising both narrow and wide body aircraft from Airbus and Boeing.
Lufthansa has also worked on growing its subsidiaries and business investments helping to develop and cement its place in the aviation industry. Today, Lufthansa is one of a handful of airlines that still operate both the B747 and A380.
Airbus A340-300:
Designed by Airbus the A340, and the similar A330 family, where produced as successor fleets to the original A300 and designed to compliment the long-haul market with the A340 designed to provide additional range over the A330.
The A340-300 was the longer of the original two variants, the other being the -200, which featured a reduced range in favour of increased capacity. With four engines, rather than the two of the A330, the A340 sought to utilise the belief at the time that four engine aircraft were better than two - with some airlines adopting this as a marketing campaign.
The -300 was the most successful variant of the A340 programme with 218 airframes delivered, with Lufthansa operating the largest fleet. In recent years, many airlines have removed the A340 from their fleet in favour of more economical twin jet aircraft like the B787, A330neo & A350.
