Though not the fastest or most advanced fighter of the war, the Grumman F4F Wildcat played a crucial role in the Pacific theater. In the critical months following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Wildcat pilots bravely challenged the seemingly invincible Imperial Japanese air forces. As the primary fighter aircraft of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps in the early Pacific War, the F4F was flown by every American Navy fighter squadron by 1942. Notably, it was also the first U.S. aircraft flown by a British pilot to shoot down a German aircraft in World War II. Powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-1830-86 engine, the Wildcat achieved a maximum speed of 318 knots. Its smaller size and lighter weight made it more suitable for carrier operations than some of the newer, more "advanced" aircraft of the time.
