MARTIN B-26 MARAUDER
With the outbreak of World War II in 1939, the Air Force tried to meet thepressing need for new warplanes by ordering directly off the drawing board. The B-26 Marauder medium bomber was the first plane so ordered. While theMarauder had a turbulent career due to lack of testing, and was several timesnearly discontinued, it eventually became a devastating weapon. It had a veryclean and advanced design, carrying eleven machine guns and a bomb load of twoand a half tons. Its Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp engines gave it a speed of 283miles per hour. The unusually small wings caused most of the B-26s troubles, making it hard to handle on take-offs and landings. Nevertheless, the Marauderproved its worth by its deadly precision attacks against all manner of targets inNazi-held Europe. Marauders flew 130,000 sorties and earned the lowest combat-loss record of any U.S. plane.
