Descriptions -

These two photos were taken by the Southern Iron & Equipment Co. in Augusta, GA around 1933, before its sale to the Rocton & Rion RR of South Carolina.

The Washington and Lincolnton Railroad Company was incorporated in 1914, and its 20-mile line between those two towns was completed in 1918. It was financed by the Georgia Railroad which connected with the W&L at Washington. The line was abandoned in 1932.Places along its route included Logan, Quincy, Florence, Metasville, Lovelace, and Langston.W&L locomotive no. 203 avoided the scrapper's torch and now operates on the Three Rivers Rambler tourist train in Knoxville, TN

The locomotive was purchased by a Georgia shortline, the Washington & Lincolnton Railroad, which went out of business in 1933. 203 was then sold to another shortline, the Rockton & Rion, which served a quarry operation in South Carolina. The little engine proved not to be powerful enough for the strenuous labor and she was placed in storage at Rockton -- for the next 44 years.

In 1977, 203 was taken out of storage and put to work in the tour trade in Florida and Mississippi; during these years 203 saw limited duty and it wasn't long before she was returned again to storage.Due to her years of idleness,203 has probably traveled fewer miles than any operating steam engine in America.

In 1995, 203 again became a shortline railroad engine whenGulf & Ohio Railwayspurchased the locomotive and began the task of rebuilding her for the Three Rivers Rambler.

WHY 5X8 PRINTS? Because the old steam age railfan photographers used 616 and 122 size film which are super long on one side and do not work well with traditional 5x7 or 8x10 prints. The 5x8 print just fits so much better and works great for steam locomotive portraits. However if you want atraditional5x7 print just add it to the notes at checkout and I will print them 5x7.All photos are printed by myself on Archival Black & White San Gabriel Heavy Weight Museum Quality Paper. All prints are made fresh when ordered.I've been collecting and printing railroad steam locomotive negatives and prints since 1984!Note- The TAPLINES RAILROAD PHOTOGRAPHY watermark will not be on the finished photographs.San Gabriel Baryta SemiGloss 2.0 offers all of the rich tonality, depth, and feel of a traditional darkroom print. The paper has a lightly textured surface, similar to a fine satin. This elegant finish adds depth and subtle reflectivity to the finished print. San Gabriel SemiGloss Fiber has a pleasant warm tone that adds natural richness to portraits and landscapes. Black & White images also benefit from San Gabriel's deep blacks and exceptional contrast. San Gabriel's whiteness comes from a layer containing a special barium sulfate variant called blanc-fixe, which means permanent white. This material is inert and lends stability to the shade of the paper over time. The coating and base stock are acid free. The base stock is made from alpha cellulose and is lignin free. San Gabriel gives you all you need for true exhibition quality photographic prints.
If you would like a larger size print, just let me know.I can make 8x10 ($6 each print), 11x14 ($12 each print) and 13x19 ($20 each print).I will then list it as a special buy it now just for you.Don't need all the prints listed, just let me know which ones you needand I'll do a special buy it now just for you!
