This sale is for this relatively rare cast aluminum Lockheed Vega Hood Ornament. The Lockheed Vega was the \"hot ticket\" if you were starting an airline in the 1920\'s. Varney, Braniff, Southern Airlines all used these as did many of the long-distance operators. Pilots pushing for speed, distance and altitude records. Other than the Spirit of St. Louis, Lockheed\'s family of flyers were world renown and popular!

This one can with many missing parts and components:There was once a support arm as part of the casting that was the hood mounting. That is gone.These originally had a light inside the cabin that would light up. That is gone.An oversized exposed radial was hung on the front with an oversized prop that swung in the wind. Those are gone as well.
Now the good news:The landing gear is intact!! These are typically sheared off.A new scale cowling was secured along with a propeller. The prop spins easily and is removable for safe shipping.A stand using pre-war components was adapted so that the model can now be displayed.Metal surface is surprisingly good for it age. There are various pits and blems but most were from the original casting in 1928\'s production.Modifications could be made to reverse engineer this into a hood ornament for your hot rod or rat rod.
