The Terminal Railroad Historical Society ofSt. Louis produces a superb annual magazine with finely researched articles,usually centered around a main story, which are fully illustrated with colorand b&w white images, ephemera, track plans, diagrams, menus, and fold-outtip-ins. Issue 81 at 268 pages is the largest issue to date. It chroniclespassenger service from St. Louis to Los Angeles via the Rock Island’s “GoldenState Limited.” Over the years, there was plenty of rail competition onpassenger service between St. Louis and the west coast. Much of that servicewent through Kansas City before taking a number of different routes west.Various railroads combined efforts, such as the Wabash and Union Pacific. TheRock took a different route, heading from St. Louis through Kansas, New Mexico,and Arizona before entering California. Resorts at Tucson, Phoenix, Yuma, andPalm Springs were served. Herein is the story of the “Golden State,” frommotive power, rolling stock, consists, dining service, wrecks, weather,maintenance, terminals, etc. A superbly researched book with color and b&wimagery.
