Film Summary

Fondly referred to as the old \'tin hare\', the Gulflander is one of the world\'s last great characters of rail travel and offers you a unique experience. This historic little train takes you on a journey with a difference from remote Normanton to far flung Croydon through the tough and inhospitable Gulf Country.

‘The Gulflander – The Home Movie’ is exactly that, a home movie – with a professional touch. Like our companion home movie, - \"The Savannahlander \" (also listed for sale) this little motor train as Bill Peach rightly observes “with the grand name,” the Gulflander, takes us on a journey through a part of Queensland most Australians have never seen, - the Gulf Country. Known to the locals as the Tin Hare or Leaping Lena, the train takes you from Normanton to Croydon on a journey that’s definitely out of the ordinary.

Along the way, we pause to take you on a historic rail motor trip from Cooktown to Laura. With the late Jim Powe’s remarkable footage riding on RMB 58, we have recreated a memorable trip visiting the ghosts of this forgotten railway. We also ride the fully restored RM 60 from Normanton.

On the Tablelands we explore the railways no longer used, but are silently waiting to be given a new lease of life for the travellers looking for adventurous train journeys.

At Ravenshoe we travel on the footplate of ‘Capella,’ the only surviving D17 steam locomotive in the world. After an overnight stop at Croydon, The Gulflander sets out on the return journey stopping on the way to reveal more surprises for its passengers.

So come and sit up front with the drivers Ken and Dan and ride the rails through the Gulf Country, another very Queensland experience.
