SR-71 Blackbird Titanium relic parts - Lot 122:
$280.00

On June 17, 1970, SR-71A Black Bird, number 61-7970, was involved in a mid-air collision with a KC-135Q tanker. The pilot canopy was torn open and flight controls were destroyed. As the spy plane began its\' death plunge, the crew was able to safely eject. When no. 970 plowed into the desert floor in far West Texas, a two story crater was formed. Witnesses from 20 miles away witnessed a mushroom cloud followed by the rumble of the explosion. The KC-135Q tanker circled the crash site and directed rescue helicopters from Biggs Air Force Base to the location of the Black Bird crew. The military removed larger items and buried the smaller shattered bits in the two story crater. Many items were left on the surface where they had been flung by the force of the crash and explosion. The filter assembly was found about 1/4 mile from the burial site of no. 970. The Titanium protuberance, obvious in photos 2, 3, and 4, is a housing for a basket style filter. At one time two filter housing were side by side, but one was lost in the crash. I picked this relic up during one of my early visits to the crash site. A Letter of Provenance will be provided to the winning buyer.
