The Short S.25 Sunderland was a British flying boat patrol bomber developed for the Royal Air Force by Short Brothers. It took its service name from the town (latterly, city) and port of Sunderland in northeast England.Based in part upon the S.23 Empire flying boat, the flagship of Imperial Airways, the S.25 was extensively re-engineered for military service. It was one of the most powerful & effective aircraft of this period.Used also in the Korean War and continued in service until 1959. It also took part in the Berlin airlift. Sunderlands remained in service with the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) until 1967. Sunderlands were converted for civil use, and known as Short SandringhamsThe Sunderland was used countering the threat posed by German U-boats in the Battle of the Atlantic. It also servedin a rescue capacity.Built by the Short Brothers Firm. A Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Sunderland performed the type's first unassisted kill of a U-boat on 17 July 1940.Primary users where the Royal Air Force,French Navy, Royal Australian Air Force , Royal New Zealand Air Force. It had an endurance in excess of 13 hours and was equipped with bunks, a galley, a workshop and of course an anchor. A Costal Command veteran. The Sunderland's defensive capabilities, fourteen machineguns in all, led Luftwaffe fighter crews to nickname it the 'Flying Porcupine'. The type continued in front-line RAF service until its retirement in 1959.The Short Sunderland III was produced in larger numbers than any other version of the aircraft, The Mark III turned out to be the definitive Sunderland variant, with over 460 built. Most were built by Shorts at Rochester and Belfast, a further 35 at a new temporary Shorts plant at White Cross Bay, Lake Windermere . The Sunderland proved to be one of the RAF Coastal Command's major weapons against the U-boats, along with the Consolidated Catalina.
