NOBILE, Umberto (1885-1978). Was an Italian explorer & aeronautical engineer. A pioneer in Arctic exploration he designed / builtAmundsenan airship“Norge” to fly tothe North Pole. Benito Mussolini backed this technological prowess to show the growingstrengthof the Fascist state. In 1926 Nobile became anational hero of Italy when he piloted the “Norge” over theNorth Pole with Amundsen and Ellsworth. The “Norge” was the first aircraft toreach the North Pole.
