Air Commodore Douglas Douglas-Hamilton, 14th Duke of Hamilton also known as Lord Clydesdale [1903 1973] was a Scottish nobleman, British Air Force Wing commander and aviation pioneer who was the first pilot to fly over Mount Everest. The flight took place in 1933 in a Westland biplane. The crew endured extreme conditions and the flight demonstrated the need for pressurized cabins and also provided the first detailed and scientific survey of the Himalaya region. The Hess Affair.... In 1936 Hamilton was invited to the Summer Olympics in Berlin by the German government and met with the top government leaders which included Hitler, Goring, the German Ambassador Ribbentrop and Rudolph Hess who shared mutual acquaintances with Hamilton in the political circle. In May of 1941 Hess who was part of the inner circle of Hitler\'s power parachuted in to Scotland to meet with Hamilton to secretly plot a peace treaty that would lead to Germany obtaining complete control of Europe while allowing Britain to stay neutral. The incident was revealed to the press and Hamilton was forced before the House of Commons to explain his role in the affair of which Prime Minister Churchill had no knowledge.
