Battle of Britain Era Supermarine SPITFIRE Fighter Aircraft COMPASS P8 in BOX:
$550.00

This is a genuine Battle of Britain Era (10 Jul 1940 – 31 Oct 1940) Supermarine SPITFIRE Fighter Aircraft COMPASS Type P8 contained in its original case with multiple \"Handle With CARE\" notices for this vital navigational instrument

Compass is in PERFECT working order & retains all it\'s fluid compass body marked with the \"A.M.\" property mark beneath the king\'s crown

Different types of aircraft compasses were built for the A.M. the \"P\" Series compasses were PILOT\'S compasses, the \"O\" Series for observers

The P8 was in common use from about 1937 & was used DURING BoB in the Spitfire, Hurricane, Tiger Moth, etc.

The grid steering compasses (Type P8 to Type P11) were fitted in WW2 Spitfire airplanes, replacing the old P4 series. They were used for course setting & reading, & as a check compass on aircraft fitted with a remote indicating compass

A grid compass or grid steering compass, is a navigating instrument. It is a design of magnetic compass that facilitates steering a steady course without the risk of parallax error.

The grid compass is the simplest steering compass from the pilot\'s or helmsman\'s point of view, because he doesn\'t need to watch the number (or the division mark) of the wanted course. He has only to steer the craft so that the N/S compass needle lies parallel between the lines of the overlay disc.

The Air Ministry (A.M.) was formerly a dept of the UK Govt with the responsibility of managing the affairs of the RAF. It existed from 1914-1964

The aircraft interior seen in images # 11 & # 12 is Supermarine Spitfire Mk. Vb BL628 YO-D, recently completed by Avspecs Ltd in Auckland you can see exactly WHERE this compass was squeezed into the fighter\'s cockpit just in front of the Joystick

Due to the fantastic quality of the restoration work which took 30 years, the cockpit of this Spitfire conforms almost entirely to wartime production standards. For this reason, the photos # 11 & # 12 can serve as reliable reference to the cockpit layout of the production Spitfire Mk. V.
