Kaminski 1999 DJHard Cover with Dust JacketCopyright 1999By Edward S. Kaminski362 pagesThis book explores the history of one of the most significant manufacturing companies in all of railroading. As it shows in some detail, the predecessors and successors of American Car & Foundry have been building railcars for more than 150 years. Along the way this close-knit family of designers, workers in wood and steel, and marketers, developed techniques and designs that the rest of the industry would follow.A history of American Car & Foundry in book form has been a long sought-after subject of every rail historian. American Car & Foundry has been generous with serious students of railway conveyance, many of whom were granted permission to study the files and photographs. Each of the thirteen plants had its own collection, though much of the material seemed to gather at the St. Charles, Missouri, plant. What amazes me most about this work is that it exists at all. What a remarkable set of circumstances came to pass to permit the production of this and future volumes. First, it is a miracle that individuals at each plant did not dispose of the dusty, musty boxes that surely must have been in the way more than once.Second, of course, is that Ed Kaminski joined the company in 1991 as an office manager in Fort Lee, New Jersey. Ed is a likable fellow who can make anyone in his presence smile, and he is articulate enough to intelligently converse on a myriad of subjects. Ed also happens to be a railfan. In his tenure he developed a genuine appreciation for freight cars. Few companies are as fortunate to have an employee so interested in its product. Very few people are so universally liked by fellow workers. I had the privilege to sit with Ed at the Milton, Pa., facility as Bart Reichard, Assistant to the Plant Manager at Milton, was only too happy to help Ed put the history of \"his\" company on paper. The germ of an idea for this volume occurred when Ed requested the company photographs to illustrate a presentation he offered to make to the Tri-State Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. Only Ed could have rallied the management at each ACF plant to find these old boxes of history. Another blessing came when ACF President and Chief Operating Officer Roger Wynkoop supported such a volume in time for company\'s 100th Anniversary in 1999.This book takes its place with the written histories of the other railway manufacturing giants. For me, it\'s the first hand knowledge of just how, by chance, the elements of this valuable work came to exist that adds most to the intrigue and historical value. But it\'s the facts and research that went into it that will earn this volume respect.
