Each American Airlines Systemwide Upgrade (SWU) is valid for upgrading one leg of a compatible itinerary (maximum of three flight segments). It is not guaranteed to get the upgrade but I will personally call and request your upgrade after purchase.
On American Airlines flights, you can use a systemwide upgrade to go from:
- Business to first class
- Economy or premium economy to business on a three-cabin aircraft
- Economy to first for domestic flights on a two-cabin aircraft
- Economy to business for short-haul international flights on a two-cabin aircraft
Meanwhile, on transatlantic British Airways flights, you can use a systemwide upgrade to go from:
- Business to first class
- Premium economy to business
- Economy to premium economy
You can only use a systemwide upgrade on individual published fare tickets. You can't use systemwide upgrades to upgrade AAdvantage award tickets, free tickets, military or other government fares, opaque fares, infant tickets or extra seats you've one SWU per passengeron the booking and tickets must be paid tickets and NOT point redemption tickets or award tickets.
Example:Two passengerstraveling from Los Angeles to Boston on aRound-Tripitinerarythat want to upgrade both legs from Economy to Business would need a total offour SWU (two per for any reason AA is unable to accommodate the request, you may choose another flight to apply the upgrade to prior to the expiration.

SWU expires on 3/31/2026 (March 31st, 2026), you must book prior to that date. You do not have to travel by that date.
If you do not book in time, there are no refunds for expired SWUs.
