Cantabria
Cantabria is a green region located in the northwest of the Iberian
Peninsula. Its geographical limits are: at the east, the Basque Country;
at the west, Asturias; at the south, Castille - Lion; at the north, the
Cantabrian Sea . It is a restless and mountainous region, with a wet
climate during all year. For this reason, the typical colour of the
landscape is green as an emerald.
The rain is present all the year and this characterizes strongly to the
inhabitants of the country: they are quiet, homespun and little
communicative, but hospitable and with a strong sense of the friendship.
The mountains of Cantabria are the most restless of the Cantabrian Chain.
Europe Peaks, one of the roofs of the mountain chain, are distributed
between Cantabria, Asturias and Lion. From these Peaks, the first
Christian Kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula were begun, and the Reconquest
of Spain against the Arab invaders.
Country with a rich history and many contrasts, however its incorporation
in the history of Spain has been recent and it has suffered many
injustices throughout its short life as Autonomous Community in the
Spanish administrative system.
The History of Cantabria is, however, very rich, since its contact in the
Reconquest with the peoples of the Iberian Plateau permitted this people
to write the History of Spain. But the historians have forgotten the
presence of Cantabria in the History several times, or simply they have
mixed with other communities with similar cultures, as Asturias or
Castille.
It´s possible the reason were that Cantabria hasn´t an own language,
unless a dialect of the Astur-Leonés in the western zone of the country,
Cantabria hasn't had a national conception as the Basque Country, Galicia
or Catalonia have. But the cantabrian people, at the last times, have
taken conscience of their national history, and the new generations are
more identified with the Historical Cantabria of their forefathers than
the province of Santander at the XIXth century.
Cantabria has an extraordinary natural patrimony, full of rivers,
beaches, coves, mountains, forests..., as well as great amount of
footpaths and routes.
In Santander we can enjoy one of the most beautiful bays of Spain, or the
wonderful peninsula of the Magdalena, where we can find the old palace of
king Alfonso XIII, nowadays it is the host of the activities of the
International University Menéndez Pelayo.
In the region we found great amount of Natural Parks, such as Cabárceno,
dunes of Liencres, Oyambre or the one of the Saja-Besaya. We can also
visit many Natural Reserves like the one of Santoña, Victoria and Joyel,
declared Protected Humid Zone from 1991.
We cannot forget the birth of Rivers Asón or Ebro, equipped with a
wonderful beauty, los Picos de Europa, the ascent to Treviso, or the
Defile of the Hermida, all of them places of an unusual beauty.
For those who wish to enjoy the sun, Cantabria enjoys a great amount of
beaches equipped with the Blue Flag, symbol of environmental quality,
among those we can emphasize the beaches of Sardinero, la Magdalena, el
Puntal or el Camello in Santander, or Somo, Liencres, Comillas, Laredo,
Berria San Vicente.
